{"id":673,"date":"2011-10-01T15:52:52","date_gmt":"2011-10-01T15:52:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/wordpress65\/?p=673"},"modified":"2011-10-01T15:52:52","modified_gmt":"2011-10-01T15:52:52","slug":"first-orbital-launch-kodiak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.grayrinehart.com\/blog\/first-orbital-launch-kodiak\/","title":{"rendered":"First Orbital Launch From Kodiak"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ten years ago <strong>yesterday <\/strong>&#8212; sorry, I haven&#8217;t been feeling well &#8212; on September 30, 2001, an Athena-1 launch vehicle lifted off from the Kodiak Launch Complex in Alaska.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/media\/medialibrary\/2001\/10\/02\/ast09oct_1_resources\/ss3sat1_big.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\n<em>(Starshine-3 undergoing inspection at the US Naval Research Laboratory. NASA image.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\nThe rocket carried the <a href=\"http:\/\/nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov\/nmc\/spacecraftDisplay.do?id=2001-043A\">Starshine-3<\/a> microsatellite (pictured above) along with three other small satellites.<\/p>\n<p>Starshine-3 was an updated version of the &#8220;Student Tracked Atmospheric Research Satellite Heuristic International Networking Experiment,&#8221; which I first covered in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.graymanwrites.com\/forums\/entry.php?303-The-STARSHINE-Demonstrator-Today-s-Space-History-Note\">this space history blog entry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The other payloads on this launch were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Picosat-9, a British-built US DoD space test satellite<\/li>\n<li>PCSat, the &#8220;Prototype Communications SATellite,&#8221; an amateur radio relay spacecraft built by US Naval Academy midshipmen<\/li>\n<li>Sapphire, the &#8220;Stanford Audiophonic Photographic Infrared Experiment,&#8221; a US DoD microsatellite built by Stanford University students and faculty<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<a class=\"synved-social-button synved-social-button-share synved-social-size-24 synved-social-resolution-single synved-social-provider-facebook nolightbox\"
