NASA image.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov\/nmc\/spacecraftDisplay.do?id=1996-013A\">Polar<\/a> was one of several spacecraft in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www-istp.gsfc.nasa.gov\/\">International Solar Terrestrial Physics Project<\/a>. (Here is a better <a href=\"http:\/\/pwg.gsfc.nasa.gov\/project_overview.shtml\">project overview site<\/a>.) Together with &#8220;Wind&#8221; and &#8220;Geotail,&#8221; Polar&#8217;s mission was to &#8220;obtain coordinated, simultaneous investigations of the Sun-Earth space environment over an extended period of time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pwg.gsfc.nasa.gov\/polar\/\">Polar<\/a> operations ended in April 2008.<\/p>\n<p>In the image above, the labels point out different instruments on Experiment<\/li>\n<li>PWI = Plasma Waves Investigation<\/li>\n<li>SEPS = Source\/Loss Cone Energetic Particle Spectrometer<\/li>\n<li>TIDE = Thermal Ion Dynamics Experiment<\/li>\n<li>TIMAS = Toroidal
