{"id":466,"date":"2010-07-10T19:40:12","date_gmt":"2010-07-10T19:40:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/wordpress65\/?p=466"},"modified":"2010-07-10T19:40:12","modified_gmt":"2010-07-10T19:40:12","slug":"x-rays-and-photons-two-japanese-space-missions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.grayrinehart.com\/blog\/x-rays-and-photons-two-japanese-space-missions\/","title":{"rendered":"Of X-Rays and Photons: Two Japanese Space Missions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Five years ago today &#8212; July 10, 2005 &#8212; the Japanese Suzaku spacecraft launched from the Uchinoura Space Center in Japan.<\/p>\n<p>Also known as Astro-E2, <a href=\"http:\/\/nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov\/nmc\/spacecraftDisplay.do?id=2005-025A\">Suzaku<\/a> included U.S.-built <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/centers\/goddard\/news\/suzaku_firstlight.html\">X-ray telescopes from NASA&#8217;s Goddard Space Flight Center<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The Suzaku mission helped complete the picture we have of the universe in the X-ray portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. Here&#8217;s the <a href=\"http:\/\/heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov\/docs\/suzaku\/astroegof.html\">GSFC page about their part of the mission<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And yesterday another Japanese mission achieved the largest-ever acceleration of a spacecraft by impingement of photons on a solar sail.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jaxa.jp\/press\/2010\/06\/img\/20100628_ikaros_3a.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\n<em>(Image of the Ikaros solar sail, taken from the separation camera. From the Japanese Space Agency (JAXA) June 28 press release.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\nThe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jspec.jaxa.jp\/e\/activity\/ikaros.html\">Ikaros<\/a> demonstrator had been launched on May 20th along with the Venus-bound Akatsuki probe, with the express purpose of testing solar sail technology. Here&#8217;s the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceflightnow.com\/news\/n1007\/09ikaros\/\">Spaceflight Now report<\/a> on its remarkable accomplishment.<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese are planning a larger-scale
