{"id":441,"date":"2010-04-23T10:00:41","date_gmt":"2010-04-23T10:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/wordpress65\/?p=441"},"modified":"2013-02-14T21:28:57","modified_gmt":"2013-02-15T02:28:57","slug":"first-molniya-satellite-highly-elliptical-orbit-high-latitude-communications","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.grayrinehart.com\/blog\/first-molniya-satellite-highly-elliptical-orbit-high-latitude-communications\/","title":{"rendered":"First Molniya Satellite &#8212; Highly Elliptical Orbit for High Latitude Communications"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Forty-five years ago today &#8212; April 23, 1965 &#8212; the Soviet Union launched Molniya-1 on a Soyuz rocket from Baikonur.<\/p>\n<p>The satellite was placed in a very particular orbit: highly elliptical, with perigee (the lowest altitude) very close to the Earth&#8217;s southern hemisphere and apogee (the highest altitude) far above the northern hemisphere. By carefully selecting the angle of inclination (how &#8220;tilted&#8221; the orbital plane is from the equatorial plane), they produced a situation in which the satellite&#8217;s apparent motion over the northern hemisphere was very small, providing extended communications coverage in the polar regions where geosynchronous satellites could not.<\/p>\n<p>The orbit soon became known as a Molniya orbit, after the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.astronautix.com\/craft\/molniya1.htm\">Molniya<\/a> satellites that were first inserted there. &#8220;Molniya,&#8221; itself, means &#8220;lightning.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a wonderful YouTube video showing how the Molniya orbit works:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/O_Iykeouj3g?rel=0\" height=\"480\" width=\"640\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8212; BREAK, BREAK &#8212;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And, congratulations to the Air Force&#8217;s X-37B team for their successful launch last night.
