{"id":1397,"date":"2013-03-23T11:29:45","date_gmt":"2013-03-23T15:29:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.graymanwrites.com\/blog\/?p=1397"},"modified":"2013-03-27T14:46:07","modified_gmt":"2013-03-27T18:46:07","slug":"space-history-the-nascent-strategic-defense-initiative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.grayrinehart.com\/blog\/space-history-the-nascent-strategic-defense-initiative\/","title":{"rendered":"Space History: the Nascent Strategic Defense Initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thirty years ago today &#8212; March 23, 1983 &#8212; President Ronald Reagan announced a research program that would eventually become the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wG019Mzd8L4?rel=0\" height=\"315\" width=\"420\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>President Reagan called for a major research-and-development effort on space-based defenses against ballistic missile attacks. Some of the work I did in the Air Force was related to SDI, which became known (usually pejoratively) as &#8220;Star Wars.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Those of us who were geeks of one stripe or another didn&#8217;t really mind the nickname.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/books\/first\/f\/fitzgerald-blue.html\">this excerpt<\/a> from <em>Way Out There in the Blue: Reagan, Star Wars and the End of the Cold War<\/em> by Frances Fitzgerald,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The announcement, made in an insert into a routine defense speech, came as a surprise to everyone in Washington except for a handful of White House aides. The insert had not been cleared with the Pentagon, and although Reagan was proposing to overturn the doctrine which had ruled U.S. nuclear strategy for more than three decades, the secretary of defense and the secretary of state were informed only a day or so before the speech was broadcast.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I find that fascinating: visionary, and quite bold.
